point therapy is a kind of bodywork technique that aims
to release the pain in sensitive trigger points. A trigger point
is an area of a muscle that begins to pulse with pain and refers
pain to other areas of the body. By applying pressure to these tender
points, dysfunctions in various parts of the body can be removed.
Trigger point therapy is also known as myofascial trigger point
therapy. ‘Myo’ means ‘muscle’ and ‘Fascial’
means connective therapy.
The trigger point therapy was originally discovered by Dr. Janet
Travell who brought fame to the therapy when she treated John F
Kennedy. Dr. Travell discovered from her work that the pain one
often experiences in one part of the body is unrelated to the actual
site of injury or disease. So, it is possible for a person to develop
an acute head ache when he is actually suffering from indigestion.
Ultimately, Dr. Travell succeeded in mapping the trigger points
in the body and also understood the manner in which pain radiates
to other parts of the body.
to Trigger point therapy, trigger points are developed in the body
as a direct result of injury or trauma. These points may already
be present at the time of birth or may develop later on. As the
body grows older, the pain in the trigger points begins accumulating.
These trigger points are usually silent. They lie waiting for adversity.
At the time of illness, injury or stress, they cause muscular spasms.
Dr. Travell injected a saline solution mixed with Procaine (a pain
reliever) into the trigger point. While this resulted in the release
of pain, the injection was itself quite painful for many patients.
In the 1970s, trigger point therapy was taken to its next level
by Bonnie Prudden, a physical fitness and exercise therapist. It
was found that instead of subjecting the patient to an injection,
applying steady pressure on the trigger points for some amount of
time also produced similar results. Prudden developed these techniques
and called it ‘myotherapy’. This is especially beneficial
to patients who find the injections very painful.
point therapy works in two ways: It interrupts the neural signals
that cause the pain. It also relieves the area of pain by stimulating
it. The aim of the therapy is to eliminate pain and re-educate the
muscles to follow newer and healthier pain-free habits. This greatly
helps reduce the pain and swelling in the neuromuscular areas. This
in turn increases the range of motion and leads to flexibility.
Coordination is improved and the wear and tear caused to the body
parts is kept to a minimum.
suffering from a wide range of conditions can benefit from trigger
point therapy. These include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Chronic back or neck pain
- Menstrual cramps
- Postoperative pain
- Stress that leads to pain in the head or shoulders
- Multiple sclerosis.
