Adaptogen by Jane Auerbach
"Adaptogen herbs combat stress.
With their side effects nil, I would guess
That at stores that'll sell 'em,
You might want to tell 'em,
"Gimme ginseng right now; I'm a mess."
The word adaptogen, coined by Russian Scientist Dr. Nicolai Lazarev,
refers to a natural herb product that increases the body's resistance
to stresses such as trauma, anxiety and bodily fatigue.
Lazarev's
guidelines for a herb to be considered an adaptogen include:
1. The herb should not cause disorders in the body's physiological
functions;
2. It should increase the body's resistance to adverse influences;
and
3. It should have a normalizing effect, improving all conditions
and aggravating none.
Adaptogenic herbs are known for their ability to balance the immune
system. They are used extensively in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese
Medicine and include such herbs as American Ginseng, Ashwagandha,
Asian Ginseng, Cordyceps, Dang Shen, Eleuthero, Holy Basil, Guduchi,
Jiaogulan, Licorice, Reishi, Rhaponticum, Rhodiola Rosea, Schisandra,
Shilajit and Suma. These have been extensively researched. Possible
adaptogens with less scientific research include: Amla, Astragalus,
He Shou Wu, Lycium, Prince Seng and Shatavari.
